Navigating Night

Artwork Description

Every night, a girl helps her father make deliveries for their small family restaurant because her English is better than his. Sitting beside him in the car, she follows a map and gives directions in Cantonese, guiding him from one destination to the next. She resents the nightly routine. Then, one evening, her father tells her how he came to the United States alone as a teenager. For the first time, she sees him in a new light and begins to understand the sacrifices...

Darkness shadows our path. Baba and I—we navigate it together.

I peek into the windows.

I don't want to be a good kid. I want to be a normal kid.

Baba speaks of his own journey through the night.

Baba picks out the most tender pieces and puts them in my rice bowl.
